Партийный съезд созывается, как правило, каждые четыре года для выдвижения официальных кандидатов партии на посты президента и вице-президента США, а также для принятия предвыборной платформы партии и программы ее деятельности в случае прихода к власти. На съезд собираются делегаты от всех штатов.
